If you are a Florida medical marijuana patient, there are two different renewal deadlines you need to understand.

How to Renew Your Florida Medical Marijuana Card in 2026: Card Renewal vs. Doctor Recertification

They are not the same thing. You have:

1. Your Florida Medical Marijuana Use Registry ID card renewal

2. Your physician certification renewal

Missing either one can interrupt your ability to purchase medical marijuana from a licensed Florida dispensary.

There is also an important new 2026 requirement affecting card applications and renewals.

Here’s what Florida patients need to know.

The Most Important Change for Florida Patients in 2026

Beginning July 27, 2026, Florida patients cannot complete an initial or renewal application for their Medical Marijuana Use Registry identification card unless they have a current or scheduled physician certification with open orders in the Medical Marijuana Use Registry.

In practical terms:

Your doctor certification and your state card renewal are now even more closely connected.

If your physician certification has expired and you do not have a current or scheduled certification with open orders, you may not be able to complete your state card renewal.

If you need your Florida medical marijuana physician certification renewed, OMNI can help.

Florida Card Renewal vs. Physician Recertification

This is where many patients get confused.

Your state medical marijuana ID card and your physician certification operate on different schedules.

Florida Medical Marijuana ID Card

Your Florida Medical Marijuana Use Registry identification card is renewed annually.

Florida allows patients to begin the renewal process 45 days before the card expiration date. The expiration date appears on the card, and the state allows renewal through the Medical Marijuana Use Registry or by paper application.

Physician Certification

Your physician certification works differently.

Florida law requires an existing qualified patient to be evaluated by a qualified physician at least once every 30 weeks before a new physician certification is issued.

That means you should not think of your physician appointment as simply your “annual card renewal.”

They are separate requirements.

Easy way to remember:

  • State card: approximately once per year.

  • Doctor certification: at least every 30 weeks.

When Can I Renew My Florida Medical Marijuana Card?

Florida allows you to submit your card renewal application beginning 45 days before your current card expires.

Do not wait until the final day.

Renewing early within that 45-day window gives you time to address issues with your application, payment or physician certification before your existing card expires.

Florida’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use also notes that online applications are processed significantly faster than paper applications.

Official Florida information:

How Much Does a Florida Medical Marijuana Card Renewal Cost?

The current Florida state application fee is $75.

This is the state fee associated with the Medical Marijuana Use Registry identification card application or renewal.

Your physician evaluation or recertification is a separate service and may have a separate cost.

The state also warns that declined or returned payments can result in an additional processing fee.

Do I Need to See a Doctor to Renew My Florida Medical Marijuana Card?

You need to keep your physician certification active, but that is technically separate from renewing the physical state ID card.

Florida requires a qualified physician to reevaluate an existing patient at least every 30 weeks before issuing a new certification.

And because of the July 2026 change, patients attempting to complete a state card application or renewal also need a current or scheduled certification with open orders in the Registry.

So while they remain separate processes, keeping your physician certification current is now particularly important.

Need your physician certification renewed?

OMNI makes it easy to get started:

Can a Florida Medical Marijuana Renewal Visit Be Done Online?

In some situations, yes.

Florida requires the initial physician certification examination to be conducted in person.

After a qualified physician has conducted that required in-person examination and issued the patient’s certification, subsequent certification renewal examinations with that physician may be conducted through telehealth.

That distinction is important.

An online appointment is not necessarily available for every patient or every physician change.

How Do I Renew My Florida Medical Marijuana Card Online?

The state card renewal itself can be completed through Florida’s Medical Marijuana Use Registry.

The basic process is:

1. Check your card expiration date

Your identification card shows its expiration date.

You can begin renewing when you enter the 45-day renewal window.

2. Make sure your physician certification is current

Because of Florida’s new 2026 requirement, verify that you have a current or scheduled certification with open orders in the Registry.

If your physician recertification is due, take care of that before waiting until the last minute.

3. Log into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry

Follow the state’s renewal process and confirm your information.

4. Submit the required state fee

The current card application fee is $75.

5. Watch your application status

Patients can follow the status of their application through the Medical Marijuana Use Registry.

Florida also accepts paper renewal applications, although the state advises that online applications are processed significantly faster.

What Happens If My Florida Medical Marijuana Card Expires?

If your Registry ID card expires, you may lose your ability to purchase medical marijuana through Florida’s licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers until your eligibility is restored.

The same basic problem can occur if your physician certification is no longer active.

That’s why patients should monitor both dates.

Do not assume that because your card still appears valid, your physician certification is also current.

And don’t assume that because you recently saw your doctor, your annual state card renewal has automatically been completed.

They are separate requirements.

What Happens If My Physician Certification Expires First?

Your state card alone is not enough to maintain active access.

A qualified physician must maintain the appropriate certification and orders in Florida’s Medical Marijuana Use Registry.

If your certification is approaching its 30-week renewal point, it is better to schedule the physician evaluation before those orders expire.

Do I Need a New Florida Medical Marijuana Card Every Time I See My Doctor?

No.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings.

Your physician recertification does not mean Florida sends you a new physical medical marijuana card every 30 weeks.

The two systems run independently:

State ID card: renewed annually.

Physician certification: reevaluated at least every 30 weeks.

You need both sides of the process to remain properly maintained.

What If I Change Medical Marijuana Doctors?

Changing physicians deserves special attention because Florida’s telehealth rules are tied to the required initial in-person examination.

Florida law permits subsequent certification renewal evaluations through telehealth when the qualified physician previously conducted the required in-person physical examination before issuing the patient’s certification.

Patients switching providers should therefore confirm whether an in-person appointment is required before assuming the next certification can be completed remotely.

OMNI can help determine the appropriate appointment type for your situation.

Florida Medical Marijuana Renewal Checklist

Before your next renewal, check these four things:

  1. Your card expiration date

Renew beginning 45 days before expiration.

  2. Your physician certification date

Florida requires reevaluation at least every 30 weeks.

  3. Your open orders in the Registry

As of July 27, 2026, a current or scheduled certification with open orders is required to complete the state card application or renewal.

  4. Your contact and residency information

Make sure the information in your Registry account remains current.

Keeping track of these dates can prevent an unnecessary interruption in access.
