Research: Cannabinoids as Sleep Treatments

Are Cannabis or Cannabinoids Effective for Improving Sleep?

How did you sleep last night?

A recent report from the Sleep Foundation Organization discovered that between ‘30% and 48% adults (20+) suffer from insomnia.’ Considering the impact insomnia and sleep apnea have on the circadian sleep cycle has inspired new research on the potential use of medical cannabis as an alternative treatment for sleep disorders.

  • 30-40% of adults suffer from insomnia

  • Almost 50% of adults report sleepiness during the day

  • Over 35% of adults in the U.S. sleep less than 7 hours per night

Cannabis and Sleep Cycles
Sleep disorders can be classified into major groups that include insomnia, sleep-related breathing disorders, parasomnias, sleep-related movement disorders, and circadian rhythm sleep–wake disorders. Fifty million to 70 million adults in the United States report having some type of sleep disorder. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25367475/

National Library of Medicine: Cannabis for Sleep Apnea Research

A high-quality review of various studies on the suggests that cannabinoids, mainly nabiximols, may help improve short-term sleep outcomes for individuals with sleep issues associated with obstructive sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, or multiple sclerosis. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings, and no clinical trials have explored the effects of cannabinoids on people with primary chronic insomnia.

There is moderate evidence that cannabinoids, primarily nabiximols, are an effective treatment to improve short-term sleep outcomes in individuals with sleep disturbance associated with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and multiple sclerosis. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26103030/

Key Points of Cannabis in Improving Sleep Problems

  • Cannabinoids such as nabilone and dronabinol showed potential benefits in improving sleep problems related to obstructive sleep apnea and fibromyalgia.

  • Nineteen trials evaluated sleep outcomes in patients with chronic pain or multiple sclerosis, with some showing improvements in sleep quality and disturbance.
