What If America Legalized Marijuana? Ask Canada...

Updated: Jul 29, 2023

In the last decade, Americans have legalized medical and recreational marijuana in a rapid grassroots campaign of mostly Constitutional Amendments led by the people and for the people.

Today, 11 states have adult-use recreational cannabis and 35 states have medical marijuana programs. Indeed, more often than not - cannabis was one of the few things both democrats and republicans could agree on in the last decade. Jobs, jobs, jobs, right?

What if the New Administration Legalized Adult-use or Medical Marijuana?

Look north, unless you're in Alaska.

Three years have passed since Canada, a nation of over 38 million residents, legalized adult-use cannabis. Looking back, Americans can see the tremendous changes that can help our society better prepare for legalization on a national level in the U.S.A..

  • Answer: Canada

Prior to national legalization taking effect how many arrest for cannabis possession took place in Canada?

  • 2018: 26,402

  • 2019: 46

Imagine having 26,356 less trials over a plant in a person's pocket!?

Question: How Many Arrest for Marijuana in the USA in 2019?

  • Answer: 545,602

  • About the equivalent of the entire population of Milwaukie, WI

US FBI Uniform Crime Report 2019

  • Total of 545,602 arrested for marijuana-related offenses in the USA in 2019

  • 500,395 of those arrested were for the possession of marijuana (92% ) in 2019

It seems like a very bad way to spend tax-payer money when the majority of the United States have already legalized cannabis in one form or another.

What Does the Biden Harris Administration Say about Marijuana?

During the 2020 campaign, the following statement was made by the Harris/Biden team. Indeed, it came from the VP-to-be herself, Kamala Harris.

"Under a Biden-Harris administration, we will decriminalize the use of marijuana and automatically expunge all marijuana-use convictions, and end incarceration for drug use alone. This is no time … for half-steppin’, this is no time for incrementalism.

Vice President Kamala Harris

In the halls of Congress, the call for marijuana reform of a national scale is echoed.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) said the prospects of the House passing his marijuana legalization bill again are “excellent.”

As we proceed into the new year of 2021, changes are about the only certainty the world of politics. If the democrats and republicans can continue to agree on logical and compassionate medical and recreational marijuana programs, America can turn the page of incarcerations for possessions, encourage local cultivation, manufacturing, transportation, and sales (aka tax revenues.)
